The Art of Sumi-e: Japanese Ink Painting

Sumi, or black ink has been used to draw suiboku-ga, or ink painting, and do calligraphy.

With the use of just black ink, the artists’ feelings are exuded through calligraphy, also various living beings such as people and sceneries can be freely depicted as if by magic.

This exhibition explores the art of Japanese ink painting on hanging scrolls, folding screens and more.

  • Sasabe Sakura Reference Room

A Life Dedicated to Sakura

Sasabe Shintaro involved in many projects of the planting of cherry blossom trees in his lifetime including Japan Mint, Osaka Castle Park, and Koshimizu Water Purification Plant in Nishinomiya. Those places are known as famous cherry blossom viewing spots to this day. Sasabe also helped to transplant the 450-year-old Shogawa-zakura cherry blossom tree in Gifu Prefecture. This exhibition highlights the main projects of the planting or transplanting of cherry blossom trees Sasabe had involved in, based on his handwritten records.

The First Step in Sake Brewing: Rice Polishing

Every step of sake brewing is carefully handled to produce tasty sake. The very first step in sake brewing is rice polishing. Since the Edo period (1603-1867), rice polishing has been making great technical advances. This exhibition focuses on the history of rice polishing technology.
